TYPE K (CHROMEL vs ALUMEL ) is used in oxidizing, inert or dry reducing atmospheres. It must be protected from sulfurous and marginally oxidizing atmospheres. It is reliable and has high accurate at high temperatures.

The characteristic of Type K is that it has strong anti-oxidation performance, and should be used continuously in an oxidizing and inert atmosphere. The long-term use temperature is 1000ºC and the short-term 1200 ºC. It is the most widely used among all thermocouples; (it cannot be used reducing gas atmosphere).
